If Breaking Bad had been set in Canada, the show would've ended after the first episode — because Walter White would've had universal healthcare
But in the U.S., going into medical debt to stay alive is all too real. Nearly 10% of Americans carry medical debt, adding up to $195 billion nationwide. And yes, that number makes my blood boil
If you or someone you love is stuck in this system, here are 3 steps to take that could help reduce or even erase your medical debt:
1️⃣ Double-check your bill
Over 80% of medical bills have errors. Ask for an itemized bill with codes, and go line by line. Don’t be afraid to dispute anything that looks off
2️⃣ Get a letter from your doctor
If insurance denies a claim, your doctor can back you up with documentation to help appeal it. Also ask the hospital to pause collections while you sort it out — that could protect your credit score
3️⃣ Know your rights
Thanks to the No Surprises Act, if your final bill is more than $400 above the estimate you were given, you can legally challenge it. So always ask for a written estimate before your appointment.
